THE COMPETITION
Preserving cultural heritage through photography
Wiki Loves Monuments is an international photography competition dedicated to documenting immovable cultural heritage. The project began in the Netherlands in 2010 and has since brought together photographers and volunteers from around the world.
Serbia is hosting its ninth edition in 2026. Participants share their own photographs on Wikimedia Commons under a free licence, making images of cultural heritage available for Wikipedia and the wider public.
Whether you are a professional photographer or are exploring your neighbourhood with a smartphone, your images can help preserve and share the stories of Serbia’s heritage.

How to enter
Four steps are all you need to take part in Wiki Loves Monuments Serbia 2026.
Choose an eligible site
Find a registered cultural heritage site using the interactive map or the official competition lists. Check its name and registry ID.
Take or select a photo
Use a camera or phone. You may also enter photographs you took in previous years, as long as they have not already been uploaded to Commons.
Upload during October
Use the competition upload form from 1 to 31 October 2026. Identify the site and publish your photo under CC BY-SA 4.0.

WHAT CAN YOU PHOTOGRAPH?
2,658 registered cultural heritage sites
Only protected immovable cultural heritage sites included in the official Serbian competition lists are eligible. An old building or monument is not automatically eligible: always check the official list before uploading.

READ BEFORE UPLOADING
Competition rules
All entries must meet the eligibility, authorship and licensing requirements below.
- Submit your own photographs, uploaded from your own Wikimedia Commons account. Copied images are not eligible.
- Upload through the official competition form between 1 and 31 October 2026. Previously taken photos are welcome, but files uploaded to Commons before the competition are not new entries.
- Show an eligible registered cultural heritage site included in the Serbian competition lists.
- Supply the site name and official identification number and an accurate description. Add relevant location and date information where available.
- Publish each photograph under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0).
- You need a confirmed email address linked to your Wikimedia Commons account, so organisers can contact you if needed.
- Normal adjustments to exposure, contrast, colour and perspective are allowed. Do not misrepresent the subject through manipulation.
- Deleted or ineligible files cannot be evaluated. Please observe applicable laws, access restrictions, personal privacy and your own safety when photographing.

The national jury will select the winning photographs after the submission period.

The ten photographs selected by the national jury will represent Serbia in the international Wiki Loves Monuments competition and receive certificates.
AFTER THE DEADLINE
How photographs are judged
In November 2026, the national jury will review eligible entries and select the ten best photographs. Jury members will be announced before judging begins.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to take my photos during October 2026?
No. You may submit photographs taken in previous years, provided they are your own work and are newly uploaded during the contest period.
Can I take part using only my phone?
Yes. Photographs taken with a phone or a camera are welcome. Eligibility and photographic quality matter, not the type of equipment.
Can I submit more than one photograph?
Yes. You may submit multiple eligible photographs. The special prize recognises the participant with the most eligible uploads.
Does every old building qualify?
No. Only sites included in the official Serbian competition lists qualify. Look for the protected site's name and registry ID before uploading.
Can I use a photograph already on Wikimedia Commons?
A photograph uploaded to Commons before the competition does not count as a new contest entry. You can upload your own previously taken photograph during October if it has not already been uploaded.
Does uploading mean I lose ownership of my photograph?
No. You retain copyright, but you agree to share the photograph under the free CC BY-SA 4.0 licence. Others may reuse it under that licence, including attribution and share-alike requirements.
